Advanced Engish 1&2 Medio. Creative Writing 5: World Building & Setting

When it comes to building your world, it is important that you take time to put a lot of thought and creativity into your world!

This is where your use of adjectives and creativity comes into play. The sky is the limit when it comes to creating your world. You can make it however good or bad you want!
Things to think about when creating the world or setting for your story:

What are the rules for your world?
Is it similar to our world?
If not, what is different?
What are the good things about this world?
What are the limitations?
What is the history of your world?
How did it get where it is today?
What is the culture and society of your world?
What kinds of nature or wildlife lives in your world?

It is important that you use elements from your genre when creating your world, since that is part of your grade. Remember that you not only have to write an interesting world but also interesting characters. You need to balance both elements of your world building along with character development.

When it comes to building a setting, this is just one main place of your story rather than an entire world. Sometimes, stories can take place in one or several different locations that don't require you to make an entire new world like in a fantasy or a science fiction story. In stories like contemporary, romance, or stories that are more like our real life world, there are usually only a couple of settings.

When it comes to writing your world or setting, make sure you are only writing parts that are important to a story. If something does not help further your plot or help your characters develop, leave it out!

For example, let's say I'm writing a story about a girl who can see ghosts, but she is also afraid of those ghosts. She meets a man in a mall she accidentally bumps into when running away from a ghost. When she bumps into this man, the ghost disappears. She keeps coming back to this mall to find this man again so she can get away from the scary ghosts she sees. Now, the setting in this story is the mall. However, when describing this mall, do I need to list every single store that resides in this mall? No? Should I write about the unique goddess fountain that sits in the middle of the mall where the woman first bumped into the man? Yes, because it is a place she will frequently go back to to try and find this man. This is the place later in the story where they will have their first fight or first kiss. Therefore, it is an important location for the story and for the development of the character's relationships.

Think about this when you are building your world or setting. What details are important for your readers to know and will come into play later? If there are any details that are not important, leave them out!!
