Examining Quotes
Quotes are small pieces of life advice or sometimes even
small poetry. In this lesson we are going to learn to examine or interpret
these quotes. This will be better prepare us to understand larger bodies of
poetry.
Quotes:
“A heart is a heavy burden.” – Howl’s Moving Castle
“From my rotting body flowers shall grow and I am in them
and that is eternity.” -Edvard Munch
“When I let go of what I am I become what I might be.” -Lao
Tzu
“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if only
one remembers to turn on the light.”-Harry Potter.
“Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.”-Lao
Tzu
Look at each of these quotes. What do they make you feel?
Good, bad, upset, happy? Do these quotes try to teach a lesson or make you feel
a certain way? Do you agree with them? Why or why not? Which one is your
favorite or least favorite?
Assignment
- Take your favorite quote and draw your own interpretation in your notebooks.
- If you had one piece of life advice to give to someone what would it be? Try to keep it 1-2 sentences. Explain in four sentences why you think your advice is important.
