Letters and emails are one in the same when it comes to writing. Maybe we do not send a lot of "snail mail" (paper mail) these days, but you are expected to write emails in school and especially in college. Here, we will discuss the proper way to write an email.
Here is an example of a letter/email:
Dear Mom,
How are you these days? I hope you are doing well. It is starting to get cold here in Santiago. We eat a lot of soup and drink tea these days. I spend most of my time curled up on my couch playing Animal Crossing. We recently moved into a new apartment. Now, we have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. We use the second bedroom for a studio. My husband and I have our desks, plus his piano in that room. The cats are used to the house now and love going out on our large balcony. We also have our T.V. in the living room so we can play video games together. It is very nice!
How are things at home? Is my little sister doing well? Please tell her I love her and miss her a lot. I also heard you guys got a new puppy! That sounds so exciting! Please send me pictures as soon as you can! Please stay healthy and stay home.
Much love,
Your Daughter.
There are several things in this letter we must review.
- An introduction. You must always address the person you are writing to in the first line. You do not have to say "dear". You can use other words like, "hello", "to whom it may concern" (if you do not know who you are speaking to such as if you email a company or business).
- A body: The body is considered where you actually write your letter. Remember to indent your paragraphs (leave a little bit of space from the edge of the paper and where you actually start writing). Make sure also when you are writing about a new topic, you start a new paragraph. I have done that here. The first paragraph I am talking about myself. However, in the second paragraph I am asking and talking about my mom. Since these are two different topics they need two different paragraphs. Both are indented!
- Closing: The closing is kind of a signal that this is the end of the letter. You can say several different things such as, "with love", "sincerely", "goodbye", "thank you", and "yours truly".
- Signature: The is the last part of the letter. This is where you sign your name and it should go under your closing!
Assignment:
You are to write your own letter to a friend or family member.
Pretend you have not seen them in a long time. Ask them how they are doing. Update them on your life. Make sure your letter has all four of the elements we discussed!
This assignment is due Friday, May 29.
