Advanced English. 1&2 Medio. Creative Writing 2: Adjectives & Adverbs

When it comes to writing creatively, two of the most important types of words you will use are adjectives and sometimes adverbs.

  • Adjectives: "a word naming an attribute of a noun". Basically, this is a word that describes a noun.

Look Around: Look around you and describe what you see. What color is your floor? How big is your bed or your couch? Is your room messy or clean? How many pictures or posters are on the wall? The answers to these questions are adjectives and how to use them.

Examples of Adjectives: beautiful, red, angry, fat, loud, happy, silly, perfect, three, pruple, delicious, slow friendly, easy, and so on.

"The big, beautiful moon shines its bright light on us."
"Amy eats a lot of yummy food."
"There are three baby birds in the nest."

  • Adverbs: "A word that modifies an adjective, verb, or another adverb." These are your "-ly" words. This also includes words of frequency and time.

Examples: kindly, quickly, really, thoughtfully, silently, happily, anxiously, suddenly, clearly, exactly, always, sometimes, usually, never, tomorrow, already, today, tonight, and so on.

"She eats slowly because she wants to enjoy every bite of her food."
"He swims quickly so he can qualify for the swim race."

*Be weary of using too many adverbs in your writing. Sometimes a better verb can be used instead of an adverb.*

Examples of using better verbs instead of adverbs:
"he walked slowly." - adverb.
"he trudged." -better verb rather than adjective. Fewer words.
"he ate his food quickly." -adverb.
"he devoured his food." -better verb rather than adjective. Fewer words.

The sentences mean the same thing but the better verb is more visually stimulating.

Earlier I said the best way to learn to write better is not only to practice writing but also to read. Reading is important because you can learn a lot of new verbs, adverbs, and adjectives.

TWO PART ASSIGNMENT.

PART I:
Fill in the blank with an adjective or adverb of your choosing.

1. _____, we should go to that _____ grocery store.
2. Do you prefer _____ or _____ clothes?
3. She ate ______ because she was worried about time running out.
4. The _____, _____ dog has a lot of energy and plays _______.
5. Do you like ________ nights or _______ days?

PART 2:
Read this description below and draw a picture based off of what you read. It is important in this assignment you pay attention to the details. You are drawing this exact scene that this writing is portraying. This assignment shows how important adjectives and adverbs are to paint a picture in your mind.

"Deep in a forest there lives an old cottage. This cottage was forgotten many years ago. Because of that, the stone has cracks in the rock and vines have crawled up the side of the home. The color of stone has faded from a happy brown to a sad gray. Surrounding the cottage are pink and white hyacinth flowers that rock back and forth in the gentle breeze. In between the flowers, weeds have sprouted high, blocking any view of the ground below. However, not far from the cottage sits a small pond. In this pond live tiny fish, croaking frogs, and slimy slugs. Ladybugs land gently on the flowers white snakes slither through the cracks in the cottage home. Even though the cottage has been long forgotten, the life inside of it lives on."

This homework is due June 12, Friday. BOTH the Part 1 and Part 2 are due AT THE SAME TIME.
